A deck repair project is currently underway on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge/Hanover Street Bridge. The project started last month and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The underside of the pre-stressed deck panels on the bridge are being repaired. Baltimore City Department of Transportation Public Relations Office Kathy Dominick told SouthBMore.com, “The initial contract for this work was $778,000; however, additional deterioration was discovered, so an additional $2 million is needed to finish the work.”

Dominick said the panels were causing some of the potholes on the bridge. There are no plans to completely repave the bridge deck after repairs are completed.

This work is unrelated to a plan to spend more than $50 million to replace the deck on the bridge and to make it more pedestrian friendly. That plan has yet to secure funding and additional studies are needed to move the project forward. A more pedestrian-friendly bridge would connect to a proposed 11-mile trail along the Middle Branch.
