“BLOCK STITCH” ON DISPLAY AT SCHOOL 33 ART CENTER
School 33 Art Center is pleased to present “Block Stitch,” an exhibition featuring film, photography and projection. The installation includes work from Tiffany Jones, Olivia Obineme, Crystal Star Whitman, Frédéric Nauczyciel, Neil C. Jones and Zhenia Bulawka. “Block Stitch” is on display in the Main Gallery from Friday, November 14 through Saturday, January 3, 2015. An opening reception takes place Friday, November 14, 2014 from 6pm to 9pm. School 33 Art Center is a facility managed by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and is located at 1427 Light Street. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday from 11am to 4pm.
Curated by Ashley Molese, “Block Stitch” looks at the intersection of geography and self-representation in different Baltimore neighborhoods, and presents a series of intimate portraits, autobiographical observations, and vignettes of the myriad ways individuals contribute to the vernacular fabric of Baltimore. The group exhibition is made up of work from six photographers and filmmakers.
Tiffany Jones presents a new portrait series celebrating hair pride among women of color. Jones explores the Lexington Market area, where purveyors of beauty supplies and salon treatments have been neighborhood fixtures for generations.
Olivia Obineme, editor of Baltimore’s own “StrangerswithStyle” blog, documents glimpses of individual personalities visible on the streets of Mount Vernon.
Crystal Star Whitman premiers a series of photographs inspired by drag culture: a clash of intimate gestures and the grit of the Baltimore punk scene.
A film by French artist Frédéric Nauczyciel blurs the lines between subject and artist, as the audience shares in the personal transformation of ‘Gabriel’, a Park Heights resident, into ‘LoBell’.
A time mapping series by Neil C. Jones elapses over a twenty-four-hour period of Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath, as captured from his own front yard in Mount Washington. In the singular moments captured, the perception of disparity and similitude that is represented amongst neighborhood denizens is nearly impossible to differentiate.
Zhenia Bulawka’s series epitomizes classic Baltimore moments played out in high fashion- anachronistically appropriating her domestic landscape in the Patterson Park neighborhood, and satirizing what living ‘in the land of pleasant living’ entails.
SCHOOL 33 ART CENTER WELCOMES “THE WATERFRONT”
School 33 Art Center presents “The Waterfront,” a solo installation from Rebecca Mutz. The exhibition, featuring reconstructed charcoal, graphite and ink drawings, is on display from Friday, November 14 through Saturday, January 3, 2015 in the Project Space. Our innate desire for connection affects the type of environments we are drawn to. Mutz tends to get preoccupied with specific spaces because of their familiarity and the memories they hold. She observes that light has a potent impact on how we remember a specific space and how we relate to new spaces we encounter. Memories are recollected differently each time, sometimes forming almost concretely before becoming slightly abstracted as they move in and out of our lucidity.
Mutz’s work disturbs and fragments the space she captures by rendering particular areas more completely, while simultaneously repeating other elements. Her drawings on paper originate in a favorite spot at the bar where she works, and once back in her studio she rips the paper and begins reconstruction.
